Campbell River is designated as a British Columbia Heritage River. The community of Campbell River, BC has been for many decades referred to as the " Salmon Capital of the World ". They go hand in hand, each feeding the other. An appropriate marraige as the River Campbell is one of the deeper spawning rivers on Vancouver Island and is the birth place of many Salmon returning every year to spawn. Every fall the Salmon return to Campbell River navigating pass the wayward sailboats, cruise ships and fishing vessels of the Discovery Passage in their attemp to complete the journey back climbing up the Campbell River to end the Salmon life cycle and give life to a whole new generation of Salmon.
Observe the life cycle of the Salmon breeding rituals up close and personal from the autumn shores of the Quinsam River Hatchery or from the local observatory at Haig Brown Kingfisher Creek which are consistently researching and conducting Salmon enhancement projects. The Campbell River is a focus point for many activities for many species. Black Bears wonder the Campbell River shores consistently for food and Bald Eagles swoop down on fish, from high above.
