Gold River Outdoor Adventures in Eco-Tourism

Gold River located on the central north part of Vancouver Island enjoys the surrounding forests, lakes, oceans and mountains because they provide an abundant amount of adventure sporting activities. People from around the world come to Gold River, BC for the river and ocean fishing, mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, kayaking, ocean cruises and caving. The community is located a short drive from Strathcona Park for hiking and backpacking. Nootka Island is also popular for sight seeing and backpacking. Visitors also come to see Luna the Killer Whale also.

  1. Ocean Fishing: Chinook, Pink, Sockeye, Chum, Coho, Halibut, Cod and Snapper can be hooked if you have the savvy and the know how to work the inlets and tides of the Nootka Sound from Gold River to Tahsis. Seriously... relax... really... just bring your lucky lure and the gear is all available here. We leave the catching of fish up to you with some pointers from our guides of course.

  2. Strathcona Provincial Park: 250,000 hectares! Massive amounts of marked and unmarked trails full and waiting for exploration. Landscape is dominated by green lush wilderness, many, many lakes, rivers, streams and creeks. Mountain peaks... Tyee Mountain, Horseshoe Mountain, Puzzle Mountain, Kings Peak and the grand daddy of them all.... the Grand Hinde control the airwaves. Hikers, walkers, backpackers, cavers, canoes, kayaks, photographers and lots of wild life share in the glory every year.

  3. Nootka Sound. The " Gateway to Nootka Sound" is through the rural mountainous communities of Gold River and Tahsis. Both communities enjoy the wilderness environment and an easy access to the Pacific Ocean leading into Nootka Sound to visit Nootka Island. Nootka Sound is centred around the First Nations Village of Yuquot, also known as Friendly Cove. A historic site, Yuquot was the summer home to Chief Maquinna and the Mowachaht/Muchalaht people and the Village of Tahsis was the winter home.   4. Caving: Nootka Sound Region bares many caves. At last count there were 50 of the underground adventures in the area filled with caverns and disappearing streams. West are of Gold River is the Upana Caves, fifteen known prehistoric caves, including Corner Cave, Insect Cave, Main Cave, Resurgence Cave, Slither Cave and Tunnel Cave. All of which draws international attention from around the world. The local spelunkers rave about them. So much underground around, so little time.

  5. Hiking and Walking: You do not need to venture far for a beautiful hike or walk. Locally trails run along the Gold and Huber River and if rough, natural wilderness scenery is your cup of tea then there is the Strathcona Park, only 9 km. away. The park is largely undeveloped and appeals primarily to people seeking wilderness surroundings. To see and enjoy much of the scenic splendour requires hiking or backpacking into the alpine regions.

  6. Wilderness-Wildlife Watching: Explore, let loose and delve into the abundance of wilderness and enjoy, in wonderment, all the wildlife in their natural habitat surrounding you. The parks and the thick rainforests in the area is overwhelming and majestic. A playground with so much to see. Cameras are a must and a video camera is a dream come true.

  7. Rock Climbing: Crest Creek Crags has over 100 routes to test your climbing stamina. These rock walls draw climbers from around the world. Every local climber can tell you stories about when they were on the Crag.

  8. Scuba Diving: Grab the gear take a tour, rent a wet suit... the closed inlets of Nootka Sound and Kyoquot Sound await. The Vancouver Island coast has some of the most internationally salt water recognized diving areas in Canada. The Nootka Island area is no exception. It offers great visibility, marine life and underwater landscape.

  9. Backpacking: Strathcona Park is the grand daddy park on Vancouver Island. Rainforest breeding thick undergrowth forested floors, rumbling rivers and is still one of the few areas left where wildlife roam the lands untouched. Pack up the house, load it on your back and head out on the many miles of trails of this magnificent nature park.

  10. Kayaking: Paddle down the shores of the Gold River, drive out to the many lakes and rivers in Strathcona Park, tackle the currents of the inlets and coves of Nootka Sound. Play among the Otters, Seals, Sea Lions, Killer Whales and Humpbacks.
