Clayoquot Sound Kayaking
Clayoquot Sound – Natures Rainforest Utopia! Clayoquot Sound is an environmental haven showcasing some of the best west coast kayaking routes and “points of interests” and stops exploring old untouched wilderness rainforest. Clayoquot Sound kayak tours could include paddling by ladders of waterfalls dropping from the sky, passing by Black Bears rolling over rocks looking for a meal or a visit to the steaming natural pools at Hot Springs Cove.
A kayaking adventure could include maybe stopping for a hike on Meares or Flores Islands, seeing a Grey Whale or Orca breaching off the bow , Bald Eagles soaring down from high above, Porpoises leapfrogging beside your kayak and barking Sea Lions basking under a morning sun. All this kayak bliss comes with many pristine sandy beaches in private coves surrounded by virgin rainforests.
Kayaking Clayoquot Sound is a unique matrix of inlets, channels, coves, peninsulas and islands located directly north of Tofino BC, Canada on the west side of Vancouver Island. The geography of Clayoquot Sound enables kayakers to choose between two travel routes.
The inner passage paddling behind Meares and Flores Island tends to be more sheltered with calmer climate conditions for kayaking. The outer passage is exposed to the Pacific Ocean and the harsher elements which can be rough and unpredictable to many kayakers who are unprepared. All kayak tours have qualified guides who are prepared with tidal currents and west coast weather conditions. Clayoquot Sound Kayak tours also exists that do the entire circle kayak route covering both routes – outer and inner passage.
Boats, trawlers and float planes use the waters off of Tofino making the ocean waters rough at times because of the high water vessel traffic. Kayaking the west coast also includes a mix bag of weather conditions especially in the shoulder seasons including heavy winds, high surf, deep swells, changing currents and dense fog. The high season of May to August is best for kayaking Clayoquot Sound. Wilderness beach camping is ideal as there are many sandy beaches to pitch camp. At times a kayak surf landing is required to access the beach. Timing is everything. Fun is all the time.
