Knight Inlet Kayaking
Knight Inlet – Kayaking tests of ability when exploring the challenges of Knight Inlet's sea currents with unpredictable surges coming up long, narrow cliffed channels. Knight Inlet is an area of historic proportions. Try first, experiencing a First Nations Ookichen Harvest in early spring. Or Kayaking past amazingly detailed pictographs and looming petroglyphs. Take in a visit to any of the remote and vacant distant uninhabited villages at Glendale Cove, Port Neville and Minstrel Island. Challenging kayaking conditions with great educational and environmental rewards for the experienced kayaker fer sure.
North Vancouver Island kayaking tours around Knight Inlet includes exploring West Cracroft Island, East Cracroft Island, Minstrel Island and Turnour Island. And… there is exploring the Havannah Channel, Chatham Channel, Clio Channel leading into Knight Inlet which is a separation point of the various islands and acts as the main kayaking funnel route.
The sudden storms in Knight Inlet can turn to gale force winds quickly because of the funnel effect of the rock cliffs developing white caps and deep swells becoming quickly a life threatening situation if not well prepared with rain gear, charts and tide tables and accompanied by a good kayak tour guide with a strong understanding of the local weather conditions and beach landings.
Beach camping in Knight Inlet is rare. The best camping is at river mouths or the shorelines of any of the abandoned logging camps. This kayaking adventure’s best camping is between Minstrel Island and Kelsey Bay. It is a mental and physical kayaking tour that should only be attempted as a one way kayaking adventure with a tour guide leading the way.
