Vancouver Island, British Columbia (BC), Canada: The untouched, virgin ski slopes of Mount Cain located just outside the village of Woss between the northern wilderness communities of Port McNeill, BC and Campbell River, BC on Vancouver Island is rated as one of the best smaller powder ski hills in British Columbia, Canada. Ski Canada, recently ranked Mt. Cain as the 5th best in powder ski conditions in Canada. Mt. Cain is a small locally run ski hill open usually, just on weekends from 9 AM to 3:30 PM, by a group of very dedicated volunteers from the surrounding ski communities. From Monday to Friday the ski hill sits untouched accumulating many inches of the white stuff, so naturally on the weekends skiers are treated to beautiful, pristine ski runs covered in fresh, powder virgin snow. Many of us, on Vancouver Island and in BC also know that the Mt.Cain volunteers take pride in the ski hill , so much it shows in the personal attention they give to all skiers, young and old who come to ski Mount Cain. Supporting the development of youth, you better believe it, Mt. Cain is the single largest employer of our north island youths during the ski season.
Mount Cain ski hill first was skied in 1978 by a group of individuals on hand made ski runs venturing out on the West Bowl of Mt. Cain. In the 1980's a 700 foot T-bar was built for skiing to accommodate the beginning and intermediate skilled skiers. But the challenging ski runs were farther up the slopes of Mt. Cain, sometimes accessed by snowmobiles in the ol' days. In 1986 a second T-bar was built to extend the vertical height to 1500 feet accommodating all skiers. Mt. Cain has over 18 ski runs today. Mt Cain just does not cater to skiiers and snowboarders only either... no way ... it is also home to prisitine snow conditions, perfectly suited, especially the West Bowl of Mount Cain, for the cross country and snowshoeing adventurers.
A skiers lodge is on Mt. Cain for day use. Accommodations are also available on Mt. Cain. There are rental cabins that cater to large groups of skiers sleeping 6-10 people. There are also some privately owned ski chalets for rental and Hostel accommodations. Accommodations can be limited on Mt. Cain. The nearby communities of Woss and Port McNeill. BC, however, offer accommodations of every style for the Mt. Cain ski experience with a minimal drive to the ski hill.
Mt. Cain is a personal ski experience enjoying powder snow ski and snowboard runs surrounded by steep pristine snow valleys creating the ideal skiing and snowboarding conditions for the ski enthusiast to challenge and embrace the skiing experience in a comfortable family environment. Mt. Cain is unique, that it accumulates its snow fall during the Monday to Friday work week untouched, then on Saturday the doors open to fresh powdered ski runs. Mt Cain is well known in these parts as having a local touch with very friendly staff, a healthy atmosphere and no line ups.
