Vancouver Island Schoen Lake Provincial Park

Schoen Lake Provincial Park brings peaceful warmth and, at the same time, some goose bumps to our adventure bodies because it is one of the more rugged, natural wilderness Provincial Parks on the inside passage of Vancouver Island.

Wilderness parks like Schoen Lake are quiet with calming natural sounds all around seemingly unfazed and untouched by the world around it. The lake being so pristine and the forests so lush that the whole picturesque landscape grabs your attention instantly.

The park is over 8,400 hectares of wilderness bliss with a network of trails that are not always in the best conditions but, you can bet, they always pack a ton of scenic fun and adventure. Schoen Lake Park is covered in pristine wilderness beauty which is ideal hiking and backpacking country for meeting nature face to face in it's purest rugged form.

Schoen Lake Park is an ideal environment to explore untouched wilderness because of the unmaintainable trail system. Some of the more popular routes include the Schoen Creek Trail and Nisnak Lake Trail.

One of the more gruelling hikes and the most rewarding is the long haul hike up the 1,802-meter Mt. Schoen. Summit views of Mt. Schoen span over meadows, valleys and Schoen Lake. The climb is challenging, so prepare with good hiking boats and layered hiking clothing.

Schoen Lake in the Provincial Park is 5 kilometres long. Plenty of room for all to enjoy in their own special way. At times, we see fisherman on Schoen Lake fishing for lake trout. Others we see kayakers and canoeist exploring the shores of the lake. Some days families are swimming and splashing. There is not a designated swimming area, but hey, it is a lake and swimming is when and wherever you like. Just be safe.

There are some basic amenities like a boat launch to access the lake for your kayak, canoe or small boat. Schoen Lake Provincial Park has two pit toilets and a small campsite but there is no showers or sani dump. There is no running water, so bring your own or you can boil the lake water for drinkable water.

How to get to Schoen Lake Provincial Park

Schoen Lake Provincial Park is rugged wilderness accessed by Davie Road which is an active logging gravel road. No BMW here! Schoen Lake Provincial Park is located 130 km north of Campbell River on central Vancouver Island via the gravel Davie Road, approximately 12 km south of Sayward. The Nisnak Meadows can be reached via the upper Adam Road.
