Big Beach is the larger beach
of Ucluelet, BC in the Pacific Rim region of British Columbia.
A destination park with a sandy, pebbled beach piled high in driftwood
logs with rock outcroppings for exploring tidal pools and elevating
your views of the vast marine scenery.
All
this scenic beauty complimented by the sounds of the ocean waves
slapping the coastline with authority, the breeze whistles a tune,
sea salt in the air, birds singing from the battered trees and,
in the distance, the clip-clop of hiking boats climbing the boardwalk
stairs as people laugh and groan as they continue on their adventure
exploring the 8 kilometre Wild
Pacific Trail.
Big
Beach is a very well laid out recreational park located in a large
cove amongst storm battered tree cover, carved out rock outcroppings
and fronted by a sandy, pebbled beach . The beach enjoys a grassy
area with a shelter, picnic tables and pit toilets. The park is
one of the main central access points to the Wild Pacific Trail.
It was not until 2002 the community created an access trail from
Big Beach to the Wild Pacific.
The picnic shelter, the grass area and beach area provides lots
of room and the right environment for many to play and explore.
People arrive at Big Beach to read a book sitting amongst the
driftwood, others come to bird watch, picnic, swim or hike in
the summer months. In the winter months they arrive in rain gear
and settle in for a few hours of storm watching. Watching nature
flex some muscle, tossing logs is an incredible sight.
The Big Beach area is always receiving improvements. To this
day there is some construction being dome on the trail. In 2000
the Central Westcoast Forest Society built a 300-metre trail,
a covered picnic area, and a toilet facility.
How to get to Big Beach: Follow the Pacific
Rim Hwy to Ucluelet. In the community, the Pacific Rim Hwy turns
into Peninsula Rd. Continue driving through the village of Ucluelet
on Peninsula Rd, pass the school zone until Matterson Drive. Take
a right and follow the road until you reach the gravel parking
lot.
