Mount Washington and Mt. Cain are the two snow ski mountains located on Vancouver Island. Both of these mountains draw a huge healthy following of snow ski and snow board enthusiasts from around the world. The mild temperatures and the weather systems coming off the coastal mountains from the Pacific Ocean and the drafts coming from the Strait of Georgia delivers some of the heaviest snow fall in BC to the island mountains. In many snow skiing, cross country skiing and snowboarding circles, Vancouver Island is recognized as one of the top ski hills in BC for its size. In some years the snow fall on Vancouver Island has been record breaking, like in 1995, the snow reached over 20 feet at the Mount Washington ski hill. The skiing, cross country, snowshoeing and snow boarding conditions are prime on Vancouver Island, The snow fall continues into early spring at the higher elevations keeping the snow hills open until the Easter weekend in April. Vancouver Island, BC snow mountains also maintain the backwood hills developing excellent groomed trails for cross country skiing enthusiasts wishing to explore along the miles of tree lined paths crossing snow covered meadows into deep powder valleys. Snowmobiling enthusiasts unload snowmobiles from their trucks ready to begin to explore the hundreds of miles of snow packed logging roads and backwood trails at the higher elevations. Mount Washington, the larger ski resort, is located centrally on Vancouver Island near the communities of Courtenay, Comox, Saratoga Beach and Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada. The closest skiing accommodations are located on Mount Washington where you are able to ski to and from your front door. Next closest is from any of the nearby communities below Mount Washington just listed off above. A 20-45 minute drive to the ski hill depending on which community you stay in. Mount Cain is a smaller ski resort located on the north portion of Vancouver Island near the community of Port Mcneill, BC. A 60 minute drive depending on accommodation location. All the communities have various types of accommodations to stay with that are relatively close to the ski hills... some with hot tubs, saunas, fireplaces, satellite TV and... all come with comfortable, warm beds and west coast hospitality.
