Snowmobiling and Sledding
Vancouver Island, British Columbia,
Canada
Snowmobiling is best enjoyed from December to April in the backcountry mountains on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. On Vancouver Island there are many snowmobiling destinations to visit - some commercial, some natural.
On the island there are ski mountain resorts with cabins and chalets providing snowmobile tours. Many of these snowmobile tours explore the lower and mid mountain slopes while the downhill skiers and snowboarders ride the mountain peaks and powder bowls.
On Vancouver Island there are thousands of kilometres of gravel roads accessing the backcountry mountains and forests. In the summer many of these roads are active forestry roads traveled by large logging trucks. In the winter, after the snow falls, the roads are quiet and become wilderness snowmobile routes.
Hiking trails in some of the higher elevation parks become snowmobile routes also depending on the amount of snowfall. Not all areas are snowmobile friendly so check the park rules and permissions prior to exploring a park via a snowmobile.
Mid mountain Mount Washington, prior to the resort, are a few pull out parking spots used as sledding staging areas. From the staging area sledders can explore the mid mountain terrain. At the top of the mountain are restaurants,
coffee shops and a pub near the main lodge of the resort.
Neighbouring Mount Washington is Forbidden Plateau. It is an old ski resort that is no longer in operation. There is a gravel road leading up to the old parking lot which is now doubling as a staging area for snowmobiling and cross country skiing.
Mount Cain is a smaller sledding destination located further
north on Vancouver Island near the community of Port McNeill,
BC. The snowmobile staging areas are located on the gravel road leading up to the ski resort. Some say the parking lot at the resort is the best staging area. .
